How to host a House Party for the women of Afghanistan:
Pick a location like your home, a progressive
cafe, or a bar for happy hour. Plan to decorate the
space with pink banners and have an info table for fliers
and a sign up sheet.
Send an invitation to everyone in your
network, and ask people to forward it widely. Follow
up with phone calls! We can also help promote your event
by sending out an email invite for you as well; contact
our grassroots coordinator, Rae, for help with outreach
and publicity at locals[at]codepinkalert.org.
Robert Greenwald's Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking,
full-length documentary focusing on key issue around the war
in Afghanistan. Featuring interviews with Afghans, journalists,
experts, policy makers, and others, the film tackles issues
such as the staggering cost of war, civilian casualties, women's
issues, Pakistan, and why a military escalation will not solve
our security issues. The film raises critical questions regarding
Afghanistan that Congress must address in oversight hearings,
which inform the public and challenge policymakers. Click

View from a Grain of Sand
2001
saw an unprecedented level of international interest in the
lives of Afghan women living under the Taliban. With the Talibans
fall later that year, the U.S. proclaimed the dawn of a new
era in Afghanistan that promised peace, democracy and liberation
for women. Years after this new era was declared, Afghanistan
in once again in the news, not because of successful reconstruction,
but because of increasing violence and a resurgence of the
Taliban. And what about the women? Since 2001, the media spotlight
on Afghan women had fallen, and with it, public knowledge
of the current situation they face. What are their lives like
now? Have they really improved since a new government took
power? Have they gained any real rights or do they still live
in fear and repression?
VIEW FROM A GRAIN OF SAND examines these issues through the
eyes of three Afghan women: a doctor, a teacher, and a right
activist. You can visit the film's site for more info: www.viewgrainofsand.com
This
timely documentary dramatizes the tale of a group of remarkable
women, how their courage and commitment to change their lives
and country has passed from one generation to the next. Their
disturbing and amazing stories reflect the recent history of
Afghanistan during a quarter-century of cataclysm: from proxy
war to civil war, from a Soviet-backed regime to the oppressive
rule of the Taliban, and to U.S. military intervention and the
current sway of regional warlords and general instability. You
can buy a copy here!
To foster dialogue
and address the issues in a meaningful way at your event,
we suggest:
Build the schema!
- Have everyone say something that they know about women
in afghanistan, their thoughts and feelings about US presence
in Afghanistan, etc.
After the film:
- Ask folks what struck them the hardest after watching
the film? Maybe a question about US involvement in Afghanistan
or ask them if they feel differently after watching this
film? If so, how?Use
these discussion questions from Peace Action.
After your House Party:
- Send an email of thanks to all of those who came and participated.
- Post a report back to our Local
Spotlight and we will send you your free copy
of Occupation 101!
- Send any feedback and action ideas to codepinkjanet[at]gmail.com.
Make sure to follow the instructions on the bottom of the
sign up sheet to send us a copy of the petition which we
will add to our list!
- Take photos of the screening and send them to photoscodepink@gmail.com
