Freedom of Speech and the Search for the Truth: SOUTH OF THE BORDER

July 2, 2010
CODEPINK LA
Los Angeles, CA

CODEPINK members and allies rallied at the LA opening of Oliver Stone's “SOUTH OF THE BORDER” last week. Defending freedom of speech and the search for the truth, we outnumbered 10 to 1 protesters led by actress Maria Conchita Alonso. Alonso had appeared on ‘FOX & Friends’ to try to discredit the film. She had to walk to a nearby parking lot to give television interviews away from the counter-protest.

Unlike Alonso's supporters, CODEPINK remained civil and stood strong for peace. Carrying signs that read "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" and "THANK YOU. MR. STONE, FOR DEFENDING THE TRUTH," we had a great time counter-protesting and gave interviews in Spanish and English to the news media.

Others present in support included Frank Dorrel’s Addicted to War, Asociación Simón Bolívar, Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES-LA), Union Salvadorena de Estudiantes Universitarios (U.S.E.U.), FMLN, Union del Barrio, Asociación Guatemalteca Americana, Alianza Nueva Nación and Waiting For Connect.
